Virtual Holiday Celebrations

Virtual Celebrating Aimee Ness Lafayette

April is the month for many holidays, and right now during the COVID-19 pandemic many families are needing to stay apart. But, that doesn’t mean the celebrations need to stop! Here is how you can still celebrate and connect with friends and family even if you cannot be together physically.

Video Conferencing Tools. There are many tools available to use to stay connected with friends and family. With many people working from home and kids taking part in e-learning, many people have become more familiar with these technologies. Some tools available are: Skype, Google Hangouts, Facebook Live or Zoom. Be sure to get the grid view extensions for Google Hangouts to be able to see everyone at once!

Make it fun by decorating your background with holiday decor or even dressing up! Now is your chance to get creative.

Friendly Competitions. Share photos of your best decorated egg, Pinterest fails, or home made decorations. Host holiday inspired scavenger hunts and see all the crazy objects your family finds. Try some “minute to win it” games and play them virtually. Get a head start and have the kids in the family put on a talent show! Many games can be played together on video conferencing tech too!

Share Religious Traditions Virtually. April is a time of many religious celebrations. Share meals, prayers and Seder traditions together virtually. Many places of worship are sharing their ceremonies as drive in services, or even on the radio. Check with your local leaders to learn how they are sharing their celebrations.

Watch A Movie Together. Get the word out and watch the same movie together, while apart. After, have some time to share your favorite parts or even hold a trivia game about the movie.

Share A Recipe. Host a virtual recipe swap! Make your favorite holiday treats and foods, share the photos and trade recipes. Vote on the most interesting plate, or most exciting food.

We hope you all have a happy and safe holiday, and that these ideas will help keep you together while we are apart. Be sure to check in with friends, family and neighbors who may have a hard time getting out to get the things they need.
